Ontario Insurance Broker — Independent Advice, 11+ Carriers Compared

Shopping for insurance in Ontario usually means a bank selling its own product, or a call centre selling one carrier's. There's a third option: an independent broker who shops the market for you.

Nova Star Insurance Consultants is a women-owned, independent brokerage based in Richmond Hill, Ontario. We compare plans from 11+ Canadian carriers — including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, and RBC — and we work for you, not an insurer. One conversation covers your life, health, disability, and travel coverage, with advice in plain language and no obligation.

Why Ontario families use an independent broker

  • More than one price. A bank or direct insurer can only quote its own plans. We compare 11+ carriers, so you see the trade-offs — price, coverage, and fine print — side by side.
  • An advisor who knows your name. You'll work with a dedicated Nova Star consultant, not a call centre. We review your coverage as your life changes and advocate for you when you need to make a claim.
  • Advice, not a quota. We're not tied to any single provider, so a recommendation only makes sense if it fits your family, your health, and your budget.

Coverage we compare for Ontarians

Life insurance

Term, whole life, and universal life to protect your family's income, mortgage, and plans. Start with our free needs analysis if you're not sure how much you need.

Critical illness insurance

A lump-sum payment if you're diagnosed with a covered serious illness, so a diagnosis doesn't become a financial crisis on top of a health one.

Critical illness insurance

Disability insurance

Replaces part of your income if illness or injury keeps you from working. About one in three working Canadians will have a disability lasting 90 days or more — provincial plans cover treatment, not your paycheque.

Disability insurance

Health & dental plans

OHIP doesn't cover most prescription drugs, dental care, vision, or physiotherapy for adults. Individual plans fill those gaps, whether you're self-employed, retired, or between jobs.

Group benefits & health spending accounts

Health and dental coverage for your team, and tax-efficient health spending accounts if you're incorporated.

Travel & Super Visa insurance

Emergency medical and trip protection for travel outside Ontario — OHIP covers only a fraction of out-of-province care — and compliant coverage for parents and grandparents visiting on a Super Visa.

Travel insurance

Mortgage insurance

Compare bank mortgage insurance, which pays the lender and shrinks as you pay down your mortgage, with your own life insurance, which pays your family and stays yours if you move lenders.

Built for how Ontarians actually buy insurance

  • Self-employed? No employer plan means no safety net. We build individual health, dental, disability, and critical illness coverage that stands in for one — and if you're incorporated, a health spending account can make those costs tax-efficient.
  • Buying your first policy? We explain term vs. permanent, how much coverage is enough (a common starting point is 7–10× income, adjusted for your mortgage and dependents), and what the medical questions actually mean — before you sign anything.
  • New to Canada, or bringing family here? From first coverage in Ontario to Super Visa insurance for visiting parents and grandparents, we handle the Canadian-specific details so nothing gets missed.

How it works

1. Tell us about your needs.

A short call or our free quote form covers your family, income, health, and budget. No cost, no obligation.

2. We compare your options.

We shop 11+ Canadian carriers and explain the differences in plain language, so you can choose with confidence.

3. You're covered — and supported.

Once your policy is in place, we stay in touch, reviewing your coverage as your life changes and helping with paperwork if you ever need to claim.

FAQ

What does an insurance broker do that a bank doesn't?

A broker is independent: we compare plans from 11+ carriers and recommend based on your needs. A bank can only sell its own insurance products, and its mortgage insurance pays the bank, not your family.

How much does it cost to use a broker?

Nothing extra. Our quotes and advice are free to you — we're paid by the carrier you choose, at no added cost to your premium.

How much life insurance do I need?

A common rule of thumb is 7–10× your income, but the right number depends on your mortgage, dependents, and savings. Our free needs analysis tool works out your number in a few minutes.

Does OHIP cover prescriptions, dental, and vision?

For most adults, no — OHIP doesn't cover most prescription drugs, dental care, vision care, or physiotherapy. An individual health & dental plan fills those gaps.

Can I get coverage if I'm self-employed?

Yes. Individual health & dental, disability, and critical illness plans are designed for people without an employer plan, and incorporated owners may also qualify for a tax-efficient health spending account.

Which areas do you serve?

We're based in Richmond Hill and work with clients across Ontario, plus Quebec, Alberta, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Newfoundland & Labrador — by phone and online, wherever you are in those provinces.
