Newfoundland & Labrador Insurance Broker — Independent Advice, 11+ Carriers Compared

Working on rotation, running a boat or a business, raising a family on the Rock or in Labrador — a lot of Newfoundland & Labrador income happens far from a head office with a benefits department. Your coverage should be built for that, not borrowed from a group plan that may not exist.

Nova Star Insurance Consultants is a women-owned, independent brokerage based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, serving clients across Newfoundland & Labrador. We compare plans from 11+ Canadian carriers — including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, and RBC — and we work for you, not an insurer.

Why Newfoundland & Labrador clients use an independent broker

  • Built for rotational and self-employed work. Individual life, disability, and health coverage that stays with you between rotations, seasons, and contracts.
  • More than one price. A bank or direct insurer quotes only its own plans. We compare 11+ carriers side by side — price, coverage, and fine print.
  • An advisor who knows your name. A dedicated consultant, not a call centre — by phone and online, wherever you are in the province, with help at claim time.

The Newfoundland & Labrador difference: MCP covers care at home, not everything else

The Medical Care Plan (MCP) covers medically required doctor and hospital services in the province. Prescription drugs are covered only through the Newfoundland and Labrador Prescription Drug Program (NLPDP) for those who qualify, routine dental and vision are on you, and MCP coverage shrinks fast when you travel — and living on an island means most trips, including medical travel, leave the province. Private coverage fills the gaps:

  • Travel insurance for anyone leaving the province — often the most-used coverage a Newfoundlander carries.
  • Health & dental for everyday costs at home, coordinated with any NLPDP coverage you qualify for.
  • Disability, critical illness, and life to protect income that often depends on physical, seasonal, or rotational work.

FAQ

Does MCP cover me when I travel?

Only in a very limited way, and not outside Canada in any meaningful amount. If you leave the province — for work, family, or a holiday — travel medical insurance is essential.

Are prescription drugs covered in Newfoundland & Labrador?

Only through the NLPDP for those who qualify. A private health & dental plan covers drugs, dental, and vision for everyone else, or tops up existing coverage.

I work rotations. Can I get disability coverage?

Yes — individual disability plans are built for rotational, contract, and self-employed workers. Your occupation and work pattern shape the options, which is what the comparison is for.

What does it cost to use a broker?

Nothing extra. We're paid by the carrier you choose, at no added cost to your premium.

Which areas do you serve?

All of Newfoundland & Labrador, by phone and online — plus ON, QC, AB, NS, and NB.
