Nova Scotia Insurance Broker — Independent Advice, 11+ Carriers Compared

Retiring, snowbirding, running your own business, raising a family — Nova Scotians juggle all of it, often on coverage that was set up years ago and never reviewed. A fresh comparison costs nothing and can change the picture.

Nova Star Insurance Consultants is a women-owned, independent brokerage based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, serving clients across Nova Scotia. We compare plans from 11+ Canadian carriers — including Manulife, Sun Life, Canada Life, and RBC — and we work for you, not an insurer.

Why Nova Scotia clients use an independent broker

  • More than one price. A bank or direct insurer quotes only its own plans. We compare 11+ carriers side by side — price, coverage, and fine print.
  • Planning that fits this stage of life. Downsizing, retiring, travelling south for the winter, helping kids and grandkids — your insurance should be reviewed when life changes, not left on autopilot.
  • An advisor who knows your name. A dedicated consultant, not a call centre, who helps with claim paperwork when it matters most.

The Nova Scotia difference: MSI covers care, not the extras — and not travel

Nova Scotia's MSI covers medically required doctor and hospital services. It does not cover most prescription drugs for working-age adults (provincial programs like Family Pharmacare and Seniors' Pharmacare exist for those who qualify), routine dental, vision, or paramedical care — and its coverage outside Nova Scotia and Canada is very limited. Private coverage fills the gaps:

  • Health & dental for everyday costs, whether or not you qualify for a provincial drug program.
  • Travel insurance for snowbirds and anyone leaving the province — an out-of-country hospital stay without it can cost more than the house.
  • Life, critical illness, and disability to protect income and family, and to leave things tidy for the next generation.

FAQ

I'm a snowbird. Do I need extra travel insurance?

Yes — MSI's coverage outside Canada is very limited, and a US hospital stay can be financially devastating without travel medical insurance. We compare plans built for longer winter stays.

Does MSI cover my prescriptions?

Not for most working-age adults. Programs like Family Pharmacare and Seniors' Pharmacare help those who qualify; a private plan can cover the rest, or stand on its own.

What does it cost to use a broker?

Nothing extra. We're paid by the carrier you choose, at no added cost to your premium.

I'm retired. Is it too late for life or health coverage?

Not necessarily — senior life insurance and individual health & dental plans exist specifically for retirees. A quick conversation sorts out what's realistic.

Which areas do you serve?

All of Nova Scotia, by phone and online — plus ON, QC, AB, NB, and NL.
