Travel Insurance Plans Compared

Travel insurance isn’t one product — it’s a family of plans built for different travel patterns. Buy the structure that matches how you actually travel and you pay for the coverage you’ll use, in the form you’ll use it. Buy the wrong structure and you can be over-insured on short trips and under-covered on the one long trip that matters.

Nova Star Insurance Consultants is a women-owned, independent brokerage in Richmond Hill, ON. We compare travel plans from 11+ Canadian carriers — including Manulife and Allianz Global Assistance — and lay out the differences in plain language before you buy.

Travel Insurance Plans Compared

Key takeaways

  • Single-trip plans cover one trip start to finish — simplest if you travel once a year.
  • Annual multi-trip plans cover unlimited trips in a year, with a maximum number of days per trip; annual day-bank plans give you a set number of travel days to spend across trips of any length.
  • A top-up adds days on top of an existing plan (annual, group or credit card) so one longer trip stays covered end to end — it must be arranged before the underlying coverage runs out.

The three main structures

Carrier note: Allianz offers all three structures, including its Annual Medical Flex day-bank plan — under which trips within Canada don’t use up your banked days. Manulife offers single-trip and annual multi-trip options with a range of per-trip day choices. Exact limits, day options and features differ by plan, which is why a side-by-side comparison matters.

Medical-only or all-inclusive?

Whichever structure you choose, plans come in two broad flavours. Emergency medical plans cover the medical side: hospital and doctor bills, ambulance, medical transport home, and 24/7 assistance. All-inclusive (comprehensive) plans add the trip itself: cancellation before you leave, interruption if you have to come home early, and baggage protection. If your trip involves expensive prepaid flights, tours or rentals you couldn’t afford to lose, the all-inclusive version is usually the one to price.

Two details that decide claims

Pre-existing conditions and stability periods. Most plans cover pre-existing conditions only after they’ve been stable for a set period before departure (commonly 90 to 180 days, varying by age, condition and plan). This rule is the same across structures — what changes is how each carrier words it, so it’s the first thing we check against your health history.

Top-up timing. A top-up only works if it’s in place before your base coverage ends. If your annual plan covers 30 days per trip and you’re staying 45, the extra 15 days must be arranged before day 30 — not from the beach on day 31.

Which structure fits you?

“I take one big trip a year”

A single-trip plan, bought for your exact dates. If that trip is a full snowbird season, a long-stay single-trip plan is built for it.

“I’m away every few months, a week or two at a time”

An annual multi-trip plan. One purchase, every trip covered, nothing to remember before each departure.

“My trips are all different lengths”

A day-bank plan. Spend your days where the trips are: 25 on the long one, 5 each on the short ones.

“I already have some coverage”

Keep it, and top it up. Group benefits and credit cards often include some out-of-province medical; a top-up or a standalone plan fills the day limits and gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Is an annual plan worth it if I only travel twice a year?

Often, yes — price two single-trip policies against one annual plan. Annual plans also cover the trips you don’t plan yet, including trips within Canada, and remove the risk of forgetting to buy before a last-minute trip.

What is a top-up, exactly?

Extra days of coverage bought to extend a plan you already have — an annual plan, group benefits or credit card coverage — for one specific longer trip. It has to be purchased before the base coverage expires, and it usually needs to start the day the base coverage ends.

Do annual plans cover trips within Canada too?

Yes, annual plans generally cover trips outside your home province as well as international trips — and with Allianz’s day-bank plan, in-Canada trips don’t draw down your banked days. Domestic trips have real coverage gaps of their own (ambulances, prescriptions, medical transport), so this is a genuine benefit, not a technicality.

Can I switch structures later?

Yes — annual plans are chosen year by year, and single-trip plans trip by trip. Many clients start with single-trip coverage and move to an annual plan once they’re travelling more often. We review the fit at renewal.
